Our senior students have been lucky enough to spend some time on the water at Bucklands Beach as part of our Education Outside the Classroom programme over the last month.
Thanks to the staff and coaches from Buckland Beach Yacht Club and the Kokokaha Sailing Experience, our students were given the opportunity to learn to sail an optimist dingy.
They started with some onshore training about sails, wind direction, steering and reminders to duck your head when the boom was swinging to the other side of the boat.
Once on the water their newfound expertise allowed them to sail out and around the buoys with ease. After a couple of hours on the boats they were experts, with many keen to take up sailing as a sport.
The rest of the day was spent in the BBYC clubrooms doing iSteam activities, where our students learned about pulley systems and the many knots’ sailors use.
Thanks you to the Owairoa Board of Trustees for funding the majority of this experience for our learners.
