Des Hunt is a remarkable New Zealand author who has written many books in his nearly 80 years. Last week our senior students were able to spend some listening to him talk where he kept them thoroughly engaged for an hour, telling tales about his extraordinary life.
Throughout his career Des Hunt has been a Secondary School Teacher of Science, Physics and Computing. He started writing non-fiction texts but eventually moved to writing kiwi stories for kiwi kids.
He told our students about his love of writing through his passion of science. Watching, while he made objects fly through the air, magnets being used on ramps and the tension building in the air as a balloon was blown up and eventually popped, were the definite highlights with many exclaims of excitement from the students.
He told the story of the terrible feedback he received from students about his first book, and how his book was rejected by many publishers before finally going to print. His important message to our students was to never give up on your dreams. Keep working and believing in yourself. A great message for those who may need some confidence in writing.
