In Room 3 we have been learning about construction which was inspired by our visit from the New Zealand author, Sally Sutton during Book Week and the destruction of the Countdown on Aviemore Drive in Highland Park.
The learners enjoyed learning about the names and uses of the different construction vehicles. They learnt interesting vocabulary like blades, trestles and rigging. We read Sally Sutton’s shared reading book called Big Machine Boogie and loved doing the construction boogie dance too.
We used our imaginations to imagine we were construction workers and what we might do if we were in that profession and the learners came up with some interesting ideas. Some would drive the big yellow diggers and scoop up the dirt, some would work on the high cranes using safety harnesses, some would be the designers and interiors decorators, while some would be the bosses of the construction sites.
Each morning we would hear stories of how different learners drove past houses being built in Howick and surrounding areas and were told about each different vehicle that was being used and the progress on different construction sites. Look out New Zealand, we have some inspired construction workers coming in the future.
