Students enjoy playing games, even when games are learning focused. There are many literacy focused games available to students in Year 3, many of which help to extend their vocabulary knowledge.
These games include matching the correct homonyms – words that sounds the same but have different meanings (e.g. rose – rows); synonyms – words that have similar meanings (e.g. sick – ill); antonyms – words that have opposite meanings (e.g. awake – asleep); and also rhyming puzzles – where the focus is on matching words that sound the same.
Through the ‘playing’ of these challenging games with a partner or in small groups, students’ vocabulary knowledge is being extended, whilst at the same time unwittingly also working on their Key Competencies.
