Music is everywhere. It’s in our homes, on the streets, and even in our heads. From the first lullaby sung to a baby to the latest hit blasting through headphones, music plays a big role in our lives. Music doesn’t just entertain; it shapes our emotions and thoughts. When you listen to a powerful song, it can lift your spirits or help you relax after a long day. Ever notice how a particular tune reminds you of a special moment? That’s because music can trigger memories and feelings.

Sound and percussion are our Science and ISTEAM focuses this term so during Week 2, the Junior School had the opportunity to watch a show presented by MusicAl Limited. The presenter, Russel is a talented musician that has mastered the art of playing numerous instruments and singing. The learners got to hear various instruments like guitars, a ukelele, flute, trombone, drums, shakers, a violin and more. They joined in with singing songs and using their bodies as percussion instruments.

At Owairoa, we pride ourselves with being a Green Gold Enviro School. The MusicAl show showcased how instruments can be made with basic home recyclable materials or materials that you would throw away in the rubbish bin. We got to see a guitar made from a milk bottle, shakers made from carboard tubes, clappers made from bottle tops and drums made from wooden blocks, The learners were inspired by this and brought their ideas back to the classroom.

No matter where you come from, music speaks to everyone. It unites people, breaking down barriers. Music can create friendships and pave the way for understanding. It allows our learners to feel inspired, artistic, expressive and empowered.
