Classes across the senior school have been taking turns with the exciting EPro8 construction equipment kit. The challenge: to research, plan and then construct a famous landmark ready for the ‘Happy New Year party popper test’. This is a student led activity and teachers can only assist in answering questions from learners.
The EPro8 kit contains lengths of aluminium, wheels, pulleys, axles, gears, rope and various tools. Students use their design and engineering knowledge to work with the bits and pieces; problem-solving and teamwork skills are put to the test.
Time management is key since each class only has two weeks to complete their landmark. Creating a crank handle that drives the contraption which then fires the party popper is an exciting part of the project.
Once finished, all the nuts and bolts must be dismantled and the kit passed on to the next set of eager learners. There’ll be much excitement in Term 4 when videos of the constructions are played back. Students will watch ‘the fireworks’ and hear the decision of the judges.
