Cooking class, held every Thursday morning, is very popular with the International Parents, as it is a time to learn new vocabulary focused on food and cooking terms. As well, it is an opportunity to experience a variety of New Zealand recipes and taste the creations from the Owairoa Kiwi Kitchen!
The recipes are carefully selected according to the current season and the availability of fresh ingredients where possible. A balance is maintained between savoury and sweet dishes. A focus at the start of the year is on lunch box ideas, as many of the parents have had no experience in making school lunches for their children.
Many dishes become firm favourites with the International families and these feature frequently on their weekly menus. A lot of the recipes can be tweaked to include other ingredients that parents or their children would prefer to use and eat.
A recent recipe ‘Apple and Feijoa Pie’ ticked all the boxes! Feijoas freshly picked from a local garden and seasonal apples combined to create a sumptuous dessert which was thoroughly enjoyed by the Parents.
