In Science, seniors have been learning all about sound. During ISTEAM they have been using this knowledge to research, design and construct a musical instrument. Things have been noisy up here, well not that loud really.
Learners are working sustainably to fashion their item. They are attempting to use only recyclable materials or end of life items. A variety of musical instruments have been constructed and then modified with the design purpose being to create variation in tone and sound. We’ve got maracas using leftover coconut shells, guitars made out of cardboard, paper pan pipes, newly named instruments with drum-like sounds, and novel constructions that require everyone to hush in order to hear.
Now, it’s unlikely that a school band will be formed in the near future. Also, you won’t hear blaring sounds from these varied instruments. What you will hear is a bunch of excited children’s voices as they discuss and compare the merits of their different materials and creations. By far the most pleasing sound of it all is the chatter of these happy, senior learners.
