To commemorate this important day of New Zealand history, our Year 1 learners learnt about how New Zealand and Australian soldiers landed at Gallipoli, Turkey on 25 April in 1915 to fight alongside the British Empire in World War I.
We read interesting stories such as ‘ANZAC Ted’ and ‘ANZAC Day Parade.’ The Year 1 learners created some amazing artwork centered around the red poppy flower and wrote descriptive pieces about ANZAC Day.
There was a lot of conversation humming throughout the Year 1 classes about how brave the ANZAC soldiers must have been. Lillie from Room 3 said, “the soldiers must have really missed their families when they went to fight.”
By building young children’s understandings about ANZAC Day, the real-life stories of sacrifices and heroism of everyday New Zealanders will forever be remembered by future generations.
