To foster a love of reading with our Junior Learners, Owairoa’s Junior School took part in Literacy Week. The week began with classes engaged in a variety of stories that were listened to and followed up with related activities. Mrs Ladybird Rice (who we think might be Mrs Rice!) even read a story to us, which concluded with a picture scavenger hunt around the school.
Another highlight was a walk to the Howick Library to attend a fun session with the Howick Children’s Librarian. We also had daily challenges where each class had to answer a book-related question and prizes were awarded to the winning class.
But….best of all, we had a Junior School Book Character Day where students and staff dressed up as a character from their favourite book! Princesses, superheroes, Hairy Maclary and Mrs Wishy Washy, Where’s Wally and even the Little Yellow Digger made an appearance.
It was so special to see the delight on parents, children’s and staff’s faces as these characters walked around the school campus. Our Junior School will never forget the beaming smiles, the building anticipation, and the excitement of Literacy Week.
