Two weeks ago, sixteen eager faces sat in a circle, ready to take on a day long mentoring programme entitled “Eight Great Habits”, delivered by long-time Owairoa friend and mentor, Mr Garth Collings.
Especially formulated for our newly appointed House Leaders and Deputy House Leaders, the course aims to coach these students for their new leadership role within our school.
The day-long course introduces our young leaders to ‘The 8 Habits’ and guides them through many exciting activities and tasks to help equip the students with skills to navigate their way through life.
The Eight Great Habits Course equips our young leaders to:
- Get control of their lives
- Improve relationships with friends
- Make smarter decisions
- Get along with parents and caregivers
- Overcome bad habits
- Define values and what matters most to them
- Get more done in less time
- Increase self confidence
- Be happy
- Find balance between school, work, friends and everything else
The 8 Habits are broken down into these areas: Private victory, Public victory and Renewal. Here they are in a nutshell:
- Be proactive (take responsibility for your life)
- Begin with the end in mind (define your mission and goal in life)
- Put first things first (prioritize and do the most important things first)
- Think win-win (have an ‘everyone-can-win’ attitude)
- Seek first to understand, then to be understood (listen to people sincerely)
- Synergize (work together to achieve more)
- Sharpen the saw (renew yourself regularly)
- Just do it (start today, small steps)
Mr Collings has had a long association with our school, and commented “I love going to Owairoa School as the students are so eager to learn. At the end of the day, the students make an individual presentation mentioning the highlight for them personally, the habit they need to work on, how the Habits Training will help them in school and home, along with creating a Personal Mission Statement that they can refer to in the future”
