Clever Students Open Windows to the Future of Learning

The Future of Learning Winners

Congratulations to Glenbrook School and Owairoa Primary School, winners of the New Era and Microsoft New Zealand Windows to the Future Competition.

The competition asked New Zealand students and their teachers "What does the school of the future look like?"  Schools from across New Zealand responded with ideas from 'homework helper lunch boxes' to 'learning helmets' using Microsoft technology to showcase their visions of the future.

New Era Education and Client Services Manager Tony Gilbert was thrilled with the quality and creativity demonstrated by the winning submissions.  "The appeal for us was the spectrum of innovation, forward thinking and practical applications of the ideas.  Special mention must also go to the teachers that have created an environment where these students can express their creativity and explore the technology to create meaning - outstanding stuff"

Snow White Success

Our amazing Snow White Crew

Congratulations to the cast and crew for a fantastic production of Snow White.

Some of the positive feedback received....

“We just wanted to express our thanks to you and the staff for your wonderful production of Snow White.  There was obviously a huge amount of effort that went into a Production of that quality.

We adored the human and were amazed at some of the talent we have at Owairoa!!  The kids adored seeing their teachers in a different role than normal and we all felt proud to be a part of a school whose teachers would do so much for their students.

We hope you all feel very proud of what you have achieved.”

Yesterday we celebrated International Day here at school.

The overall theme for the day was "We are Many. We are One", and there were many.... we ended up having 46 cultures being represented by our staff and students over the course of the day long celebration.

The day saw us marching proudly in the parade first thing in the morning, followed by a performace of items in the cultural concert, finishing off with a yummy shared lunch in each of the classrooms.

Fair-Trade Morning Tea

As it is Fair-trade fortnight, Miss Hargraves arranged for some ethically sourced products for the staff Morning Tea, including coffee, black tea, green tea and chocolate, all containing the official 'Fair Trade stamp'.

Fair Trade fortnight is where we celebrate that producers in the 3rd World can get a fair deal for their produce.

The Owairoa staff enjoyed their ethically sourced tea and coffee at morning tea.

´Something on a Stick´

Judges selecting the winners

Every few weeks the staff celebrate a special event or special day, as part of the staff team building strategy.  This week staff celebrated “Something on a Stick” and those who wanted to enter were given 5 sticks [bbq skewers] on which to prepare a suitable food item for morning tea.

The creativity of entries gave the judges a hard job as they deliberated over who should be the winners.  The first place went to Kerry Forse for her Easter Bunny creation, second to Alan McIntyre for his Rainbow Fruit Spears and third to Claire Hargraves for her environmentally friendly Rice  and Roasted Vegetable creation.
The whole staff appreciated the contributions and enjoyed a tasty morning tea together.
